Welcome, Adia!

We finally got to welcome Adia to our group at the beginning of the week!  She's the new one in the picture above...in the Arc shirt!  HeHe!  She's in between Alexis and Liz if you're not sure!   Adia coming on board was definitely a highlight of the week, but we also enjoyed the company of Kate's friend Sandra at the end of the week on Friday, and once again she treated us to delicious homemade Colombian food!  The days in between were productive and fun, too!  Here's a look at the week of June 7, 2022:

Tuesday

In addition to welcoming Adia to our group today, we also welcomed old-timer Cameron back for a visit!  His parents try to plan visits to Cameron's grandparents in Yorktown around our bowling days, so here he is!  We're always happy for him to join us.  Today, his bowling was very good, and Nan gave him a high-five after a great turn!

Strike 1! (Alexis)

Strike 2! (Adia)

Strike 3!  (Abraham being congratulated by Patrick.)

It was actually strike 3 in a row for Abraham - a turkey!  🦃   And look at his final score!  He was today's highest scorer!

Devin T. joined the Strikers' Club today, too!  He likes to break dance to celebrate!

Xavier, Abraham, Liz, Cameron, and Laura waited patiently for each of their turns, and also for lunch to arrive!  We'd like to give a shoutout to Laura's family for donating a gift card for us to put toward today's adventure!  Thank you, Palmer Family! 💖🎳

Adia, Erik, Sam, Kate, Liz, and Devin thanked Kevin for having an awesome family!  They sponsored our pizza today!!  Thank you, Wayne and Debbie.  The pizza was hot, gooey with cheese, and topped with pepperonis...just how we like it! 🍕🍕🍕

Back at the center we made thank you cards for some of last week's blessings:  our cruise with Captain Corey and our celebration of Donut Day, courtesy of Liz's family!  After everyone signed the cards, we ended the day with Choice Time.  It was a Terrific Tuesday!

Wednesday

Before we started our official dance warm up, Adia was listening to music on the computer.  Devin T. spotted her on the sofa and the next thing we knew, Adia was sharing her music with him!  That's how our guys treat each other, and it didn't take Adia long to figure it out!
💛

We had an unusual start to our Eaton work day.  Since the air conditioning is still out in our building at Eaton, we sent a crew over to pick up some work for us to do at the center.  James or Jorie is always happy to bring work to us, but today, Devin, Sam, Kate, Cameron, and Erik stepped up to ride over to Eaton to load our van and give James a bit of a break!

It didn't take long once the delivery was brought into our room for everyone to get busy.  Kevin and Xavier had several tubs of pieces to sort and they handled it like pros!

Alexis, Nan, Adia, and Erik applied gaskets to the parts that Kevin and Xavier sorted.  They seemed very happy to be working on this job!

Liz applied gaskets also, while Patrick and Devin counted screws so we could make bags with 50 in each.  In the background, Kate and Cameron also worked on counting screws.  We had our music playing in the background!

There was even more counting going on at these tables as Laura, Devin T., Abraham, Sam, and Drew counted screws, too.  We finally finished a box of 8,000 screws...50 at a time!

We enjoyed another Eaton work day at our center today, but we do hope to get back to "our" building onsite at Eaton before too long!  Going to our job is a big deal!

After lunch we made this big card for Annmarie.  We found out today that she was diagnosed with pneumonia, so we will keep sending our positive thoughts and prayers.

Lisa and Alexis went to visit her at the hospital this afternoon.  Annmarie was alert, and communicated by blinking her eyes and giving 👍👍!  We gave her this photo album that had over 50 pictures of Annmarie and us for her to enjoy looking at as she continues her recovery.  We sure miss our girl!

Thursday

We had fun celebrating National Donald Duck Day today!  It gave us an excuse to do Disney-themed things, including watching the classic Swiss Family Robinson, which we loved.  At the beginning of the DVD was a note saying that it was Disney's custom to always show a short feature film before the main film, and the short turned out to be about Donald Duck being stranded on a desert island!

The gang really liked the Swiss Family Robinson adventure film.  It was fun seeing how clever the family was at surviving, and watching them build an amazing treehouse!  Some of us even thought we would have agreed with the mom and dad at the end to stay there instead of being "rescued" back to civilization!

We took a couple of intermissions since the movie was long.  During the first one, we got out the pool noodles to teach Adia one of our favorite games!

She caught on pretty quickly and seemed to enjoy swatting the balloons with her pool noodle.  That's her on the front left, beside Xavier.

We saw some good teamwork as everyone tried to keep the balloons in bounds!

During the second intermission, we made birthday cards for our master gardener friend, Krafty Karen, which Drew, Laura, and Devin T. are holding.  Happy Birthday, Karen!! 🎂🎈🥳  She lives in Devin T.'s and Devin B.'s neighborhood, and Devin B. is going to drop them off for us.  Her birthday is on Sunday!   Thanks, Devin B. (not pictured).  Karen will be surprised!
UPDATE:  Krafty Karen texted Lisa on Friday afternoon to say she was delighted when Devin B. made a special delivery to her house.  She promised to wait until Sunday to open it! 👀

Friday

Today was a Pet Supplies Plus Work Day, and we introduced Adia to this wonderful experience.  Looks like she and Alexis were stocking product in the dog food section!

Fresh from graduating from ODU, and becoming Parks & Rec's newest employee, Karryna joined us to assist with job coaching.  She and Devin had plenty to do in the cat section!  Congratulations on joining the Parks & Rec team, Karryna!  We're happy we will still get to see you!

Today we would like to showcase the parakeets at Pet Supplies Plus!  They are so beautiful!  Come see them!!

Hi, James!!!  We were happy to stop by Eaton after finishing our PSP work to drop off the Eaton work we did on Wednesday!  Heigh-ho!  Heigh-ho!  It's off to work we go...at Pet Supplies Plus AND Eaton!  We are grateful for our jobs!!

We were working at the center this morning, too!  Lunch was being made for us (and delivered) by Kate's friend Sandra, so we decided to make a batch of brownie bites for dessert.  Drew and Michelle handled the preparation of the batter.  And even though Lisa forgot to set a timer, Nan could smell them and luckily we got them out of the Nina just in time, and only had to remove the burned edges!

Kevin, Sam, and Devin T worked with Nan to prepare The Arc's July mailing.  This took a while with this smaller than usual crew, but they stuck with it and the calendars are in the mail!  Well, not for our guys because they got to bring theirs home today!  Be sure to check out the events for July...we hear there will be a dance party on July 9th!

Kate had a great idea to make a thank you "card" for Sandra using the letters in her name.  She and Xavier decorated the letters SANDRA, and then we came up with words to describe her like spirited, adventurous (she's getting married and moving to Portugal in October!), nice, delightful, radiant, and awesome!

Sandra LOVED it!  The video of our friends reading the descriptions we wrote on the back of each letter is too long to post, but they did a fantastic job!

Here's our delicious home-cooked meal of rice with onions and garlic, slow-cooked pork in salsa verde, and fried plantains!  It was our first time trying the plantains, and they were scrumptious!  It was our second time having the rice and pork, and it was twice as good this time around!  😉😋  Thank you for cooking for us again, Sandra.  It is extra tasty because you make it with so much love!  We appreciate your friendship!!

There was no way Sandra was leaving without a dance party first!  She cranked up some festive Colombian music and our guys got to moving!

We said Sandra should be hired to be our PE teacher because she just kept the music coming, and we just kept moving!  She is very motivating and it was a great workout for us!

Look at the pride on her face as she shows us the video she took of our dancing.  She said we were amazing!

But don't take her word for it!  Check us out! 🠟  Thanks again, Sandra, for your cooking, your love of dancing, your friendship, and your love!  We had a blast with you today!

Before we wrapped up the day with yoga (no pictures, today), we had one more surprise.  Mr. Howard popped in to say "hello" and we were thrilled to see him!  For those who may not recall, Mr. Howard was one of the JRES custodians when we opened the AoA six years ago, and he became a fast and very good friend to us.  A few of years ago, he was promoted to a position that had him running from school to school, and we didn't get to see him as often, though he stopped by every chance he could.  He is retiring now, and we wish him the very best!  He promised to check on us from time to time, and we sure hope he will!  💚💛💜

We continue to miss our friend, Annmarie, who is still recovering at the hospital.  Her mom, Teresa, sent us a short video of Annmarie waving to us today, and we were so happy to see her.  She's going to be hospitalized a while longer, but each day she gets stronger.  Keep hanging in there, Annmarie!  We're keeping your seat warm!

Here are some of our plans for next week:

Tuesday:  We'll join our master gardener friends today for a session about bugs in the garden!  We will also see if there is anything to harvest that we could cook this week.  It's forecast to be very warm today, so we will probably return to AFCC for lunch and a lesson on Flag Day.  Please wear Arc shirts and bring a bagged lunch.

Wednesday:  We'll revisit a couple of National Days that we've had fun "celebrating" in the past:  National Megalodon Day and Smile Power Day.  We'll have lessons on giant sharks and good dental hygiene.  Father's Day is Sunday, so we'll prepare a special treat for the special dads and other "men-tors" in our lives.  Lunch on your own.

Thursday:  We're going to have a cook-off today.  Two teams will compete to make the best Sloppy Joe Casserole and two other teams will compete to make the tastiest fudge for National Fudge Day!  We'll all be winners as we enjoy Sloppy Joe Casserole and fresh fudge for lunch!  In other activities, we'll have a lesson about Juneteenth, and play Disney board games since we ran out of time to do that last Thursday.

Friday:  We'll welcome special guest, and Liz's mom, Lise, as our Chef of the Day!  It's National Eat Your Veggies Day and she's going to share some of Liz's favorite roasted and sauteed veggies with us.  We'll add chicken pasta salad and have a delicious lunch today!  It's also National Flip Flop Day, so please wear or bring flip flops, if you have them, and we'll play some fun games!  Dress to stretch for yoga, too!

🏌🏌🏌  Hey, Everyone!  COMING SOON - August 6!
Royal New Kent Golf Club 🏌🏌🏌

It's time to get organized and see who's up for being a WOTM Golf Tournament Sponsor and/or player this year!  Moose Patti is pounding the pavement to drum up the support of local businesses, as well as lots of her friends, and we hope our AoA Families will jump on board, too!  This is a significant FUNdraiser for The Arc, with proceeds supporting the AoA, as well!  The Women Of The Moose LOVE us!  Please let Lisa know if you'd like to sponsor a hole or form a team, or you can contact Patti directly.  We will need 3-4 AoA members to volunteer on the day of the tournament.  Please check your calendars and see if you can help from about 9-1.  It's a lot of fun!!  Check out this link to the blog post from the 2021 tournament.  It was a huge success...even in the rain!

Have a great weekend, everyone!  Keep the thoughts, prayers, and love coming for Annmarie.  Thank you very much!

Lisa, Carol, Nan, and the AoA Gang
