Sunny February Week

This week we enjoyed an abundance of sunshine and much milder than average temperatures for February!  It makes us a little nervous to think about what March may bring, but we will take days like we had this week any time!  It was a perfect week to visit Christina at the Art Museums of CW, enjoy a picnic, begin a new volunteer opportunity, work at Eaton, and, most special of all, welcome our master gardener friends for an appreciation luncheon.  Here's a recap of our beautiful week!

Tuesday

We arrived at the Art Museums a little early, so while we were waiting for Christina to join us, Annmarie grabbed a group hug with Drew and Sweet T!

Seems Christina thought a group hug would be a good idea, too!

Christina chose three "quilty" objects to talk about today, all by Black artists/artisans.  The first was this quilt, hand stitched by Susana Allan Hunter, who was a member of what became a renowned quilting community known as Gee's Bend, Alabama.  Susana used whatever materials she could get her hands on, and followed no "quilting" rules.  She made over 100 quilts in the mid-twentieth century.

This painting by Bernice Sims depicts a family gathered around the porch at "Big Daddy's" house, and there are quilts hanging on the clothes line.  This painting is part of the recently opened exhibit on works by Black American artists and artisans.

Another beautiful quilt on display is this one by Arlonzia Pettway, also from the Gee's Bend community.  She was known for her innovative use of colors, and in person, this quilt is colorful and very beautiful!

Christina was inspired to talk about quilts today because she was recently "cleaning out some clutter" and she came across colorful scraps of cloth and a bunch of burlap-covered blocks that she thought we could turn into quilt-art!  Kate, Drew, Alexis, and Dev B are seen concentrating on arranging the cloth scraps in their own creative way...no need to follow any "rules."

We had to leave our pretty designs with Christina so the "tacky" glue we used could dry.  She said she will be "thrilled" to deliver them to us in person one day soon!  Thank you, Christina, and you're welcome to visit anytime!

It was such a gorgeous day that we went to Bicentennial Park, which is behind the museums, for a walk after our visit with Christina.  There were a lot of daffodils in bloom, and many buds on the trees!

After our walk, we made the short drive over to the picnic area at the CW Visitor Center.  We enjoyed a relaxing picnic lunch with friends, in the middle of February!

Back at AFCC, we caught up with Heike and got to sing "Happy Birthday" and give her some homemade goodies.  We made an extra casserole on Friday, which was her birthday, and kept it in the freezer.  Carol baked a fresh apple crisp this morning.  Heike had taken a day off on her birthday, but she was pleased and grateful that we remembered her day!

Here's a closeup of her birthday board.  Isn't it pretty?!

This morning we hung suet for the birds.  It was the first time we have done this, and by the end of the day, we saw Mr. Woodpecker helping himself!

Something else we did today, was create a thank you / Mardi Gras necklace for Patti!  Lisa and Alexis dropped it off at her house, and she loved it!  She sent us this picture, so we had to include it in our blog!  Thanks again for the special time last week, Patti!  We'll remember it for a long time!

Wednesday

We had a wonderful day, even though Trader Joe's had to reschedule the tour that 1/2 of our gang was planning to take this morning.  Turns out, they had a glitch with a delivery truck's arrival, and it would have been in our way!  So, today's TJ group will visit the store next Wednesday, instead.

Our library crew went to work first thing.  Laura, Michelle, and Alexis got the job done today!

Our group that was planning to go to Trader Joe's ended up working on decorations for tomorrow's luncheon with the master gardeners.  They were so busy, no pictures got taken, but they did a lot of work!

Meanwhile, our first group to volunteer at Grove Christian Outreach Center (GCOC) did a lot of work, too!  We took 1/2 of our crew and worked for an hour and a half.  Our first task was one of our specialities:  assembly line!

We filled about 100 bags with canned goods and the other volunteers at Grove took notice of our efficiency and work ethic!

The crew's next job was to put two rolls of toilet tissue into bags.   This took a bit more dexterity to fit the rolls side by side, but we figured it out!

The Grove staff and other volunteers were surprised to see how we unload a big tub of things!  If you've seen some of our pictures from Eaton work days, you know that Sam is always willing to climb in and help get the things from the bottom that we can't reach!  This tub was filled with a variety of different items that had been donated.

Not only did we empty the items from the tub, we sorted them, too.  There were books, toys, kitchen items, school supplies, and more.  All of our vocational training at Eaton helped prepare us for this work, and the folks at GCOC were impressed!

Can you believe they asked if we could help put tables away?!  To quote Sam, for us, this is a "piece of cake."  (We explained that we put up and take down our tables every day!)  We did a great job at GCOC and they are looking forward to meeting the other half of our crew in March.  We're very proud of our work today and look forward to our partnership with Grove Christian Outreach Center!

Tomorrow we will host our master gardener friends for a luncheon, so today, in addition to making decorations, we also prepared a presentation.  We're going to use the letters in GARDEN to share our appreciation.  We worked together to brainstorm compliments such as "G is for great people who grow great things."

As if we had not done enough today, we also made lovely birthday cards for The Arc's Executive Director, Pam.  Her birthday is Friday, but she is out of town, so we won't be able to have a party for her.  (Oh, snap!)

Pam will be surprised, though.  Lisa and Carol stopped by her office and hung the cards so she will be welcomed back next week with lots of beautiful sentiments from her pals at the Arc of Abilities!
Side note:  We would like to thank Krafty Karen for donating the pretty background paper we have used to make birthday cards this week!

Thursday

Getting ready for a special event always takes all hands on deck.  This morning, before we got down to work, we snagged a video of our guys during the dance warm up.  They were in great moods today!

Next thing we knew, the food was ready and our room looked as colorful as a spring garden!  We were ready to greet our visitors, the master gardeners!

When Rick arrived, Adia and Kate pointed out the beautiful bulb pot we planted at our final fall session with the master gardeners last October.  It's been so pretty with the colorful pansies all winter, and now the bulbs are starting to bloom, specifically hyacinths!

Michelle caught the cameraperson trying to get a shot of her chatting with Krafty Karen and Rick!

These are the fresh flowers Karen brought us from her yard, along with our cookies decorated with butterflies and flowers.  Together, they made a perfect centerpiece for our serving table.

Nine of the master gardeners were able to join us today.  We were so happy to catch up with them!

Here is more of the group, and more of our decorations.  We were hoping to bring a touch of spring indoors.  We didn't know when we planned this that Mother Nature would bring record temperatures on this date, so it felt like spring for real!

Before we ate, Karen went over an assignment she brought for us to work on next week!  It's about the regions of Virginia, and the agricultural products that come from them.  The timing is perfect, as we are up to state #10 in our study, and it happens to be Virginia!  Thanks, Karen.  We will complete the assignment next week, and get smarter when we do it.  You'll be proud of us!

Today's lunch was baked ziti with garlic bread and a side salad (with blueberries 😋) and it was very tasty!

After enjoying our pretty cookies for dessert, we had a group share the compliments we wrote for the master gardeners yesterday.  They did a wonderful job!

We managed to get a picture with all of us and the master gardeners!  Well, all but one.  Rich always takes pictures for the MGs, and he was behind the camera for this one.  Thanks, Rich.  We are happy you came today, and you always take pictures that capture our joy at hanging out with all of the master gardeners!

Later, MG Carolyn took some of Rich's photos and created a beautiful journal page for the MGs archives.  We love the way Carolyn always sums up our wonderful experiences with the MGs, and of course, Rich's photos are great!
Once we cleaned up from our luncheon, we read more of our story about Beans, and then made cheerful cards for our artist friend, Jeff. (Picture is from his first visit with us last December.)

Jeff is recovering from hip replacement surgery, and we know these cards will brighten his day!  We miss him!

Friday

Today we went to Eaton where James had pulled some work for us to do.  We spent a couple of hours there this morning, and enjoyed working with the big garage door open on another beautiful day!

Liz, Carol, Adia, Alexis, Erik, and Nan applied gaskets.

With Patrick (in the background) bringing them box after box, Michelle, Drew, Kate, Kevin, Laura, and Annmarie unboxed electrical amps.

There was a huge tub of mixed parts that Abraham, Dev B, Sweet T, and Xavier sorted.  Everyone was so efficient, that we were done by lunchtime today!

On the way back to the vans, we ran into Jorie and Adair, who are always happy to chat with us and share a hug!

We returned to AFCC for lunch, and were planning to have yoga with Jaime later in the afternoon.  But, it was such a pretty afternoon that we decided to drive over to New Quarter Park for a walk instead!  This group noticed that this bush was loaded with new buds.

We're not sure what the recent spring-like weather means for the bushes, trees, and flowers, but we know that there is a lot of color already all around our community as we approach the end of February!

New Quarter Park is a great place to stretch our legs for a brisk walk and lots of deep breaths of fresh air!  We enjoyed our unplanned movement activity today!

We hope everyone had as great an ending to their week as we did!

We're looking forward to next week when we will see February end and March begin...that was quick!  Here are our plans:

Tuesday:  With the weather forecast calling for another mild day, we've decided to head to the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center to check out their exhibits, and then take a walk around the battlefield area.  We'll follow this with lunch at our favorite riverside picnic area and a game of Winter Challenge Corn Hole.  We will also finish our read-aloud, Full of Beans, keeping us on track to read one book a month!  Bring a bagged lunch, and if you have a National Parks Access Pass, please bring that, too.  Thanks!  Arc shirts optional.

Wednesday:  Today we will send 1/2 of the gang to tour Trader Joe's (rescheduled from last Wednesday) while the others remain at AFCC to update the March calendar.  (That group will tour TJ's next week.)  After lunch, we're going to watch a movie that is set during the Great Depression, called Kit Kittredge.  Our read-aloud was from a boy's point of view during this time period, and this movie is from a girl's point of view.  Lunch on your own.  JRES Cafeteria is available, but menu isn't posted yet.

Thursday:  We have double the fun on tap for today.  First, a crew will go to Pet Supplies Plus to work, so wear your PSP shirt.  Second, and more excitedly, it's Drew's birthday!!  The crew that stays at AFCC will get the room ready so we can party with Drew from lunch time on!  Drew's family is treating us to chicken nuggets and fries for lunch.  Thank you, Daytons!  After lunch, we will play games, dance, and tell jokes - just for Drew!  It's going to be a fantastic day!

Friday:  We have an "egg-citing" job to work on today.  We're stuffing hundreds of eggs with candy for the Powhatan Secondary egg hunt!  Coach Teri was our "agent" for this job, and we 'd like to thank her, as we'll get to use our earnings for something fun!  We will also study the 10th state, our very own Virginia, and complete the lesson Krafty Karen left for us on regions and agriculture.  We had leftovers after our master gardener luncheon last week, so we'll enjoy baked ziti and salad for lunch, and we'll end the day with yoga, so dress to stretch!

We hope everyone has a wonderful last weekend in February!

Lisa, Carol, Nan, and the AoA Gang

Celebrate Good Times!

This week was about so many smiles.  We had one opportunity after another to share joy and fun.  We celebrated Valentine's Day, delighted in a visit with the therapy dogs (after a brief hiatus), worked at the pet store, partied for Mardi Gras with Moose Patti, and had a great lunch for Heike's birthday, even though she missed it!  Come along on our journey...

Tuesday

Valentine's Day comes but once a year, and we make the most of it.  This morning we all worked to put together our lunch and get our room decorated for a fitting Valentine party.  This pic is representative of many of our mornings, as we all concentrate on our assigned tasks.

We easily turned our room into a Valentine spot and got down to celebrating the day.  Look at our lovely ladies!

And how about these handsome gentlemen?!

Aww!  Our Rec besties, Karryna and Tracy, along with Nan, Lisa, and Carol were ready to celebrate, too!

Thank you, Kevin, for sharing these tasty cheesecake bites with us!  You're so sweet!

We paused from partying to assemble The Arc's March mailing.  BINGO is back for an activity!

Be sure to complete your sign up sheet and return it to Kellie ASAP!

Remember the life-size card we made with Mike at the Watermen's Museum last week?!  It was a centerpiece of our decorations today.  Greetings from your Valentine, Annmarie!

We missed Abraham for the past couple of weeks while he was out of town helping his sister and brother-in-law with childcare for his new nephew.  We're so glad to have Uncle Abraham back!

Michelle has a Valentine smile that would light up any room!

Finally, the exchanging of Valentines!  All 17 of our friends were in attendance today, so this was a busy segment of our day.  We loved how they helped each other!

💘💘💘 Happy Valentine's Day, 2023! 💘💘💘

Wednesday

We found out at the last minute that a couple of therapy dogs could visit us this morning.  The library crew remembered that there are so many good books representing Black History Month, and checked out several for us to use when reading with the pups!

Due to some scheduling issues, we didn't get to see the therapy dogs in January, and today's visit was not certain.  We were thrilled when Caroline was able to join us with Pip and Indy!

We were also thrilled that Ava and Gunther could come on short notice as well!  We missed our dog and handler friends.  So many smiles this morning!

We enjoyed our Black History Month book selections during small group sessions with our friends.  Caroline, Pip, and Indy seemed happy to be back in our routine, too!

Ava and Gunther's group was quite chatty about their books.  They let Ava know that we have had many discussions about the civil rights movment.  Many thanks to Ava and Caroline, Gunther, Pip, and Indy, for spending time with us this morning.  We loved seeing you and cannot wait to have ALL of our therapy dog and handler friends back in March!  😍🐕🐶😍

To make sure we're prepared to party with Patti tomorrow, we did some brain work about Mardi Gras.  We learned a bit of history about the day, and also talked about symbols associated with it.  We used the colors of Mardi Gras, gold, purple, and green, to help us highlight answers on our reading comprehension worksheet.  Abraham and Sweet T were proud of their work!

It was getting close to lunch time so we wrapped up our fun and engaging morning and headed to Newport News Park.  We noticed the skies were not too bright as we made our way to the picnic shelter...

Next thing we knew, it was raining!  Not much, and it didn't last as long as it took to make this video, but still, we were surprised!

While we ate, it briefly rained and stopped two times.  Undaunted, we finished eating and then headed for a walk.  We didn't get far before turning around and heading back to a shelter when it started to rain again!  It only lasted a couple of minutes, so we decided to keep on walking.  We like to live on the wild side!

Luckily, we didn't encounter any more rain, but we did see some beautiful white buds and several blossoms on this small tree.  Lexi and Adia found the blooms to be lightly fragrant, and later, Liz used her app to identify it as a star magnolia!

While several of us lingered around the star magnolia, others meandered toward the overlook.  There were seagulls floating by and a couple of ducks, and we even spotted a great egret in the distance!  (Sadly, we also noticed litter at the edge of the water...😔)

Despite the overcast skies, we got a couple of nice group pictures!

It was a nice day for a walk, and we found daffodils are blooming early in Newport News, just as they are in Williamsburg!

Not wanting to take a chance that it might rain if we set up our corn hole and bocce games at the park, we came back to the center and played corn hole inside.  About this time, the sun came out slightly!  Oh well, our guys like indoor corn hole.  The Virginia Corn Thunder edged the Minion Corn Holers by 2 points for today's win.  Sam, on this team, was the day's player with the most points, adding a whopping 5 for his team!  Congrats, Sam!

Thursday

Today was amazing, and we have a lot of pictures to prove it!  We had so much fun.  One group went to work at Pet Supplies Plus, and the other group transformed the room into a Mardi Gras spectacular so we could party with Moose Patti!  This is one of her favorite celebrations, and we were about to be treated to a very special time with her!

First, a few pictures from PSP.  A delivery truck was running late, so instead of stocking shelves, our team did some cleaning today.  They swept floors and dusted shelves.  In this shot, Adia and Kate were helping to feed some of the animals.

The crew chose two animals to highlight today.  Here are the guinea pigs!  According to Alexis, there is only one male, and several females, and they are all "soooo cute."  Kate, Adia, Michelle, Dev B, and Erik agree!

There are several parakeets, too!  They were singing their hearts out today.  Wouldn't you like one for a pet?!

This picture was spotted near the entrance.  We're so proud of the Bobowicz Family and their successful operation of two Pet Supplies Plus stores, this one in Lightfoot and another in Chesapeake.  We'd like to thank them again for giving the Arc of Abilities the opportunity to work for them!  Thanks to many of our AoA families for shopping at PSP, too.  😊

At the center, Abraham, Laura, Dev T, Sam, and Kevin worked diligently to color lots of letters and extra pictures, using the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, and gold.  We decorated our big white board with samples of our brain work from yesterday, too.

Drew, Patrick, Annmarie, and Xavier were also on decorating duty.  We got everything together about 3 minutes before Patti arrived!

WOW!  Not only did Patti bring us homemade gumbo for lunch, she also brought an authentic king cake which she had shipped here from New Orleans.  Patti, you are sooo good to us!

Before we got into the gumbo and king cake, we danced to New Orleans Jazz music as we held up the great masks we made yesterday!

We learned that it is against the law to be on a float in a Mardi Gras parade unless you are wearing a mask!

We danced up a good appetite and couldn't wait to try Patti's gumbo!  It was loaded with veggies like peppers, onions, celery, and okra, and lots of chicken, shrimp, and sausage, too.  Plus, a little cajun spice!  We served it over rice with a cornbread side, and it was so delicious.  We did not know Patti was such a great cook, but trust us, she is!

Aww, look who stopped by just as we were serving lunch.  Much to everyone's surprise, especially Nan's and Lisa's, Grandad decided to take a drive to the AoA today!  He's been getting some strength back in between his chemo rounds, and he misses his friends at the AoA.  It made our hearts smile to see him.  He agreed that Patti makes very good gumbo, too! 💙😋💙😋

Here's a close up of the king cake Patti had sent all the way from Nonna Randazzo's Bakery in New Orleans.  It had the best cream cheese frosting!  We were curious to find out who would get the slice with the little baby inside...as we know that by tradition that person would be in for a year of good luck!

Erik got the piece with the baby!  You're going to have some good luck coming your way, Erik!  And, as Adia reminded us, Erik found a ladybug crawling on him at the park yesterday.  They are signs of good luck, too!

We played a Mardi Gras themed dice game.  Sweet T was rubbing the die before his roll!

Guess who won in this group!  Patti is cheering for Erik, who filled his sheet before Patti or Kevin.  Looks like Erik's good luck has already started!!

Patti hung around with us all afternoon so we took her outside for a walk on this warm February day.  We really enjoy her company.  Thank you, again, Patti, for what you did for us today.  Your gumbo and king cake made our day (you know how much our gang loves a good party), and the time spent catching up with you was priceless.  We're so glad we're friends!

Finally, we noticed that a hyacinth has popped up and bloomed in our "lasagna pot" that our master gardener friends helped us plant last October.  The pansies on top have been vibrant and beautiful all winter, but some of the bulbs (they are layered in the pot, like a lasagna) have begun to push through the soil.  We are hosting the master gardeners for a luncheon next week, and can't wait for them to see this!  So pretty!

Friday

A rainy Friday morning brought out the disco ball during our dance warm up!

When it was time to prepare lunch, we had some great helpers.  Nan and Michelle enjoyed cutting canned biscuits into quarters for our breakfast casserole.

Dev B and Sam happily browned the sausage and found the hash browns we needed for the recipe!

Alexis "tutored" Xavier on the fine art of cracking eggs.  We needed 18 for our casserole...he practiced with 2!

Patrick and Laura had a lot of apples to wash!  They were going to help Carol make her "famous" apple crisp to go along with our breakfast casserole.

Our recipes turned out beautifully and they tasted great, too!  We had planned to celebrate Heike's birthday, but she decided to take a well-deserved day off.  We kept her in our thoughts today, and made an extra casserole to freeze for her.  We'll give it to her on Tuesday, along with a freshly baked apple crisp, too!  🥳🥳🥳

For morning movement, we had set up the spinner so we could play the "Roaming Recess" game Lisa made up a few weeks ago, where we spin to find out which exercise station to visit.  After our workout, we put names on the spinner and used it to select winners of special Mardi Gras prize packs Patti left for us yesterday.  Erik and Patrick were the lucky winners of glittery golden masks and colorful beads!  Thanks, Patti, for bringing these fun gifts!  It was exciting to spin for winners, and you would have loved the round of applause everyone gave Erik and Patrick!

We had a lesson to commemorate that Monday is Presidents' Day and we learned that Lincoln was the tallest president at 6'4" and Madison was the shortest at 5'4".  We also watched a video about the making of Mount Rushmore, and when we worked on the comprehension sheet, Adia gave Kevin a high five for correctly answering a question!

In our read-aloud, Full of Beans, the setting is Key West in 1934, during the Great Depression.  In the story, President Franklin Roosevelt sends "New Dealers" to transform a Key West from shambles into a tourist town.  Laura's colorful shirt depicts a scene from the movie Encanto, but it also helped us visualize how colorful the houses in Key West might have looked after they were painted during the New Deal.

We can't think of too many weeks when we were (happily) busier than this week, so our Friday afternoon yoga session was welcomed!

After a relaxing stretch, we put away our mats and said farewell until next week, when we will see how busy it will be.  We won't have three celebrations again, but it promises to be full of fun and engaging experiences!

In fact, we will begin a brand new partnership with Grove Christian Outreach Center next week.  We'll do that, and more, on Wednesday.  Here is our entire schedule for next week:

Tuesday:  This morning we will visit with Christina at the Art Museums for a lesson on Black History Month.  If the weather cooperates, we will take a walk in CW and enjoy lunch outside at the Visitor Center, so bring a bagged lunch.  We'll continue our read-aloud today as we aim to finish by the end of the month, and begin making preparations for Thursday's special event.  Please wear Arc shirts.

Wednesday:  We will split into two groups for today's incredible adventures!  First, one group will kick off our partnership with Grove Christian Outreach Center by volunteering at their facility this morning.  At the same time, the second group will travel to Trader Joe's for a tour of their store.  (We will repeat this on March 8 and switch groups.)  It's going to be an exciting morning!  Lunch will be on your own.  JRES Cafeteria is available for Chicken Sandwich or Hot Dog on Bun,  Our afternoon activities will include making birthday cards for a special Arc office friend!  Please wear Arc shirts.

Thursday:  Today we are welcoming our master gardener friends for a luncheon in their honor!  We're just weeks away from beginning our spring sessions with them, so we want to let them know how appreciated they are.  We will prepare baked penne and side salads for lunch.  We'll also play a round of Winter Corn Hole Challenge - hopefully outside as the forecast says it will be 74 degrees!

Friday:  We have an Eaton work day scheduled for today, so wear your Eaton shirts and bring a bagged lunch.  We should have time for yoga when we return to the center, so dress to stretch, too.

Have a great weekend,

Lisa, Carol, Nan, and the AoA Gang
