5th Annual WOTM Golf Tournament

This week we are grateful to our friends, The Women of the Williamsburg Moose, Chapter 1755.  They persevered, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and sponsored a wildly successful 5th annual golf tournament to benefit The Arc of Greater Williamsburg, our Arc of Abilities Day Support Program, and Moosehaven and Mooseheart charities.  Led by "Moose" Patti, this hardworking and dedicated group of women gave it their all, and we are so thankful!

Due to the restrictions in place due to the pandemic, the tournament was not able to have a large gathering/opening ceremony and shotgun start as in years past.  Each team had a tee time somewhere between 8 and 11 a.m.  As a result, our "cheer team" didn't arrive until mid-morning.   Here, Carol, Kate, Devin, Pam, Alexis, Lisa, and Liz posed with our thank-you posters before heading out to Holes 16 and 17.  Pam had actually been there since 8, and was helping with the raffle ticket sales.  So, between the seven of us, and over several hours, we got to see over half of the golfers on the RECORD-SETTING 20 teams Patti and friends had recruited!!

Devin was happy that he had gotten a hair cut earlier this week.  Look how handsome he is!  Thanks, Dev, for hanging out with all of the girls.  You are a good sport!

Speaking of the girls!  Here are Alexis, Kate, and Liz waiting to head out to the course while Carol purchased raffle tickets from Pam and Moose friend, Denise.  All of our Moose friends were wearing their 5k shirts from last year!

We didn't get pictures of Patti with our cheering squads this year because of the timing of her team's tee off and when they made it to our locations on Holes 16 and 17.  As our shift was coming to an end, Carol and Lisa were on the golf carts taking Kate and Devin back to the clubhouse where their rides were waiting.  But Patti did get to see Alexis and Liz on Hole 16...even though they forgot to grab a picture!  On the way back to pick up Liz and Alexis, Carol and Lisa caught up with Patti at Hole 18 for this shot.  Thank you, Patti, for your dedication to The Arc of GW and AoA.  We know putting this tournament together under pandemic circumstances was a real challenge.  We are so grateful for your commitment to seeing it through on our behalf.

Here, Patti was focused on her putt on Hole 18 while her team stood by.  It was a very warm, and steamy day, but Patti and all of the golfers told us they wouldn't have missed this tournament!  We saw a few new faces, but most of them have been playing in support of this tournament all 5 years!

One of our long-time tournament players is Liz's dad, Greg!  We'd like to thank him for his continued support of this tournament.  We would also like to congratulate him on his retirement from Ferguson Enterprises!  👏👏  Maybe you can golf all the time now, Greg...well, after you tackle your "honey-do" list, we hear!

We are also thankful for our loyal AoA associates who spent most of their Saturday cheering on and thanking the golfers.  Due to the pandemic restrictions, we had to limit the number we could have this year, but our presence was known!  Kate and Devin enjoyed hanging out with each other and Carol at Hole 17, where they settled in under a big shade tree with the posters Nan, Carol, Alexis, and Liz had made earlier in the week.

Liz and Alexis set up at Hole 16 with Lisa.  They also had a shady spot, and enjoyed chatting with each other as they waited for golfers to come through.

Liz and Alexis were at the "Move Up Hole" where, for an extra donation, teams move to a closer tee for their first shot.  The girls "worked" the players with their charm and enthusiasm, and helped raise lots of extra donations!

We are thankful to a number of AoA families who sponsored holes at the tournament.  Patti creates signs with our guys' pictures on them, and they really liven up the course!  Thank you, Collins Family, for your hole sponsorhip!

Thank you, MacMasters Family, for your hole sponsorship!

Thank you, McGregor and Thompson Families for your hole sponsorships!

Thank you, Lisa and Alexis, for your hole sponsorship!

Thank you, also, to the Palmer Family for your hole sponsorship!  With the restrictions in place, we couldn't make it to Laura's hole this year, but here's her sign on display at a past tournament.  Patti assured us she was in a prominent place this year near the start of the course!

The 5th Annual Women of the Moose Charity Golf Tournament is in the books.  We cannot thank Patti and friends enough, so we'd just like to say:

In other AoA news:
What a year 2020 is so far!  We were thrilled to reopen our day support program near the end of June, but with the coronavirus situation being unpredictable, and the case counts going up in our community as July rolled around, we found ourselves suspending the program once again.  It's been 3 weeks now, and we miss each other very much!

We Miss You | Miss you cards, We missed you, Miss you

We continue to meet via Zoom!  That's going well, and we even have surprise guests from time to time...such as here, when Mr. Stutt joined us!  We announced earlier in the summer that he is transferring to Matthew Whaley School, and we will MISS him at James River.  He promised we haven't seen the last of him, and we certainly hope not!! (He's the cool dude in the shades on the 3rd row!)

On Thursday's Zoom, we celebrated Nan's birthday!! It was easy to pick the theme, seeing as how much we all know she loves Jeopardy!  We made cards and shared kind words, danced to her favorite Rod Stewart song ("Forever Young"), and then played her favorite game!

Happy Birthday, Nan!  We hope you enjoyed your Zoom celebration!  Thanks for working with Liz and Alexis to create posters for us to use at the golf tournament, too.

We also sang to Kate's mom, Elizabeth, on Thursday's Zoom, because her birthday is coming up on Sunday.  We've said it before, birthdays are important to us.  We're grateful that we have the virtual option so we don't miss any special celebrations!

Elsewhere over the past couple of weeks, our guys have been busy.  It's still hard to be "safer at home," because after all these months, we're getting bored!  We long for the day when many of our social outings will be truly safe again, like movie theaters, Busch Gardens, and hanging out in large groups with family and friends.  But our awesome families are hanging in there.  Here's a peek at what some of them have enjoyed recently!

We love to see Kevin walking on the Noland Trail in Newport News.  Wish we were with you, Kevin!

Kevin and his family were on their boat recently when they came across some dolphins.  How exciting!

Laura became an aunt for the second time back in early March, just before the pandemic hit. She hasn't been able to visit with, or hold her niece, Eloise, but a couple of times since her birth.  We are sure she was happy when she recently got to hold this bundle of sweetness!

Sam and his friend JD spent time together at the pool.  As hot as it's been, we know they enjoyed being in the water!

Sam has also been busy helping his mom, Coach Teri, conduct a third food drive at their Powhatan Secondary neighborhood.  We are proud of Teri for organizing these very successful food drives to help those in our community who continue to need food assistance.  We're also proud to have our beautiful Arc vans and drivers Harold and Wayne available to help with collection and delivery.  Way to go, Teri, Sam, Harold and Wayne!

Kate and Devin had the same idea as Sam and JD.  It's been so warm that a get-together at the pool was refreshing, and fun!  Hi, friends!

Yum!  They also enjoyed a refreshing shaved ice treat from Polar Snow.  Good choice!

Kate's dad, Mark, is an expert in pipe organ maintenance, restoration, and repair.  She's been helping out in his shop recently!

Eaton continues to support us with work for some of us to do at home.  Drew helped Carol unload some amber lenses that will eventually be placed on PowerSlide doors.  The lenses need to be gasketed, which is a "sticky and tricky" operation for most of our guys, so we are sending these to Meemaw.  They are her speciality!  We also send Meemaw all of our best wishes as she recovers from knee replacement surgery. 💜💛💚 She's doing well, and asked for us to send her the Eaton work.  Thanks, Meemaw!

With us being away from the center, we had to make posters for the golf tournament at home this week.  In addition to Nan, Liz, and Alexis, Carol also made some posters at her house.  Thank you, Carol!

This week, the James City County Police Department is holding a #ChooseToInclude run on the Capital Trail.  It is in place of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which was canceled due to COVID.  The JCC police still wanted to support The Arc of GW, so they put together this event, and sold t-shirts to help get the word out.  Looking good, Alexis!

Kona and Zoe, along with Patrick, agree that we're all grateful to the JCC Police for their support of The Arc!  And they want to be included, too!  Patrick, you look very handsome in your new shirt!

This good looking dude named Drew sends his signature "thumbs up" to the JCC Police!  Once again, a dedicated group found a way to host a fundraising event, despite the pandemic.  We send a huge and heartfelt thanks to the James City County Police Department!  👏👏🏃🏃👏👏

Finally this week, we want to remind everyone that The Arc of GW is commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act by highlighting the impacts it has made on the lives of millions of Americans since 1990.  For the next several months, keep an eye on our Facebook page and/or website for links and other resources that will inform, and maybe even surprise you!  Our Executive Director, Pam, wrote an excellent commentary which was published this week on the WY Daily's website, and here, in the pages of the Virginia Gazette.  Well done, Pam!

We hope everyone is remaining safe, healthy, and cool!

Lisa, Carol, Nan, and the AoA Gang
