Carrying On

Happy August!  The Arc of Abilities carried on and kept busy while Lisa was on vacation...here's what we were up to!

Bowling on Tuesday was a lot of fun and there were several strikes!  Look at the smiles!

After bowling, a stop by the Botanical Garden revealed beautiful blooms, butterflies, and several deer as we took a walkabout.

On Wednesday, Michael was back for Tai Chi and this week, Laura decided to help him with the lesson!

Later on Wednesday, Pam W., who was filling in for Lisa, led us in the creation of our own coloring books to mark National Coloring Book Day.  We learned about outlining pictures and going back later to fill in with color.  This is a project we will finish next week!

We also celebrated Ice Cream Sandwich Day by making our own! Yummy!

We learned all about juicy watermelons for National Watermelon Day on Thursday.  Our craft was so cute we tried to eat it...until we realized we had a real watermelon instead!

It was the first Thursday of the month so we headed to the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg where Christina took us on a hunt for toys!  We learned that in Colonial times, boys and girls had different toys so that they would learn different skills.  Girls may have had dolls and tea sets while boys may have had horses and riding equipment.

We enjoyed looking at a number of dollhouses.  Luckily, this beautiful one was found at the last minute in an attic of a house about to be torn down!

In the art room, Christina taught us how to make a toy similar to what Colonial children would have played with.  Called a thaumatrope, it consisted of pictures drawn on either side of a wooden disc.  The pictures would be related, such as a fish and water.  The disc would then be placed on a piece of string and when twirled, would look like the two sides of the disc were one picture.

For Friday morning's dance warm up, we were excited to see Laura getting her groove on!  She's been a little shy in the dance department!

Patrick's mom Sue filled in for Lisa on Friday and we enjoyed having her join the dance party too!  As usual, it was a good thing we danced because later...

we celebrated Chocolate Chip Cookie Day by making our own...from scratch!

Wonder if they saved any for Lisa?!

It was another busy week.  Attendance was down as we had several associates who were traveling, but that doesn't stop our gang from finding fun every day.  Many thanks to Pam W. and Sue for helping this week!  Thanks also to Sandy from the Arc office for meeting us at the museum.  We couldn't have done it without you!😍

There will be lots of fun next week, too!  Here's what's up:

Tuesday:  We are taking our dancing crew to Regal Theater to see "Happy Feet Two" followed by lunch at Sal's Restaurant.  We've been wanting to eat out again, at a sit-down restaurant where we could order from a menu.  We'll encourage lunch specials (with salads) such as half-sandwiches or a slice of pizza.  Please bring $5 to put toward lunch, and we'll cover the rest.

Wednesday:  We'll celebrate both Rice Pudding Day and Book Lovers Day.  Please bring your favorite book...or books!  Lunch on your own...but we will make Rice Pudding for a side.

Thursday:  We're looking forward to making S'mores since it's National S'mores Day.  Since we will be in the cooking mood, we'll also prepare our own lunch of Grilled Chicken and Steamed Veggies.

Friday:  It's Presidential Joke Day...we'll keep it clean!  Lunch on your own!

We also have some upcoming dates to keep in mind:

Friday and Saturday evenings, August 18 and 19:  We have been asked by our friends Patti and the Women of the Moose to help with their evening activities on the weekend of their golf tournament.  We enjoyed doing this last year and can't believe it's been a year already!  What we will do is help prepare and serve food, and help with raffle ticket sales.  We would like 3-4 volunteers for each night, from 5:45-8:30.  Lisa, Carol, and Nan will also be on hand.  This event takes place at the Moose Lodge on Richmond Road.  Please check your calendars and let Lisa know if your associate is able to help on either of the two nights.  Thanks in advance!

October 7 Arc's 8th Annual 5K at Williamsburg Landing - Register soon...the price goes up August 1st!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Lisa, Carol, and Nan
